North Carolina is an “at will” employment state which means that employers have the right to terminate an employee at any time and they can generally do this for any reason. There are, however, a few exemptions to this. An employee cannot be terminated for reasons that discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, religion, national origin, or handicap. Employers are not able to terminate an employee for reasons that violate the public policy of the state of North Carolina.
